About Greenbackville, Virginia

Founded in 1867, Greenbackville became an official name in 1874 through the vision of the United States Postal Service. This small town, alongside neighboring Franklin City, flourished due to the Worcester Railroad, completed on April 7, 1876. This railroad connected the rich harvest of oysters and other shellfish from Chincoteague to the bustling markets of Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City.

Though challenges arose in the 20th century—such as the Great Depression, the construction of the Chincoteague Causeway, and a powerful nor'easter in 1962—Greenbackville's spirit remained resilient. The abandonment of the railroad line from the Maryland state line into Franklin City in 1956 marked a turning point, but community efforts led to new beginnings.
